Jersey
Island Singers is a mixed voice choral society which currently has approximately
70 to 80 active members. It was
founded by Arthur Lobb in 1993 when he brought together the Jersey Ladies Choir
(which had an international reputation having performed all over Europe and many
times for the BBC) and the original Island Singers.
Arthur was its first conductor, passing over the baton to Mel Davidson
who, in 1994, passed it on to Nicholas Cabot, MBE. The
choir enjoys a varied repertoire which encompasses all the usual suspects –
classical major choral works – to contemporary pieces, both large (Karl
Jenkins’ “The Armed Man”) and
small (anthems by John Rutter and Bob Chilcott – both of whom have crossed the
Channel to give us workshops). It
has developed a strong relationship with the University Choir and Orchestra of
Caen and with a German choir, KiBoJuCo. Reciprocal
visits are in the planning stages. The
choir’s main Jersey programme for 2010 is a performance of the Rutter “Requiem” and Stainer’s “The
Crucifixion” on Maundy Thursday, April 1st, at St Mark’s
Church followed by Bob Chilcott’s “Salisbury
Vespers” at St Thomas’s on Friday, October 29th.
The choir is delighted that Mr Chilcott has agreed to conduct this
performance. In July the choir will travel to The Royal Albert Hall in London to join with the massed choirs of The Really Big Chorus in singing Faure’s “Requiem” and a newly commissioned work by Karl Jenkins, “Gloria”, which will receive its premiere at that performance. It is intended that these works will be performed by the choir at St Mark’s Church on Maundy Thursday 2011. The choir
meets throughout the year, save for school holidays, in the main hall of Jersey
College for Girls Preparatory School, Claremont Road, St Helier on Tuesdays from
7 – 9 pm. The choir is always keen to accept singers new to Jersey and whilst past experience and an ability to read music are helpful, commitment and enthusiasm is paramount in ensuring that both singer and choir receive maximum enjoyment from making music. New Members should contact Mr Cabot – tel 864014
Annual Subscription - £36.00.
